1) AROMATHERAPY:

Candles as a part of aromatherapy calm everyone in the general environment. The scents of the candles are extremely calming like lavender, vanilla, and rose scents. The lemons or citrus, “fresh linen”, “grassy scents will give you a gentle uplift without over stimulation. In the bathroom a candle is better than an air freshener. This is great for the guest bathroom or when company is expected.

Candles on a “warming plate “do not need such close supervision as an open flame, again a de-stressor for some all by it self. You get the scent with the worries.

2) MOOD LIGHTING:

Candles make the perfect mood lighting, because it is subdued and gentle on the eyes. The colors of candles are wonderful too, the soft yellow, light blue, light green and soft rose. They also go well with lots of different decors.

When you get home from work light a few candles while you eat your dinner, the food will taste better and digest better because you are calmer. Use candles while you read, in addition to your regular lamp (we don’t want to “stress your eyes” any more then usual), during quiet mediation and while doing light chores around the house, this brings calm and relaxation in to your environment. A small tea candle in a nice container will relax you to sleep and will burn out after you are gently asleep.

3) ROOM DÉCOR:

Candles in groupings are fantastic de-stressors. Besides being and instant décor changer. Using candles along with a water feature is an added bonus. By using different sizes in an arrangement, this brings out your personal creativity. True you can buy arrangements already made but you lose the creative personal touch. Bought arrangements are good as gifts for instance. Changing the candle displays every so often gives on a feeling of growth and comfort as well as something to look forwards to. All this increases calmness and purpose, eliminating stress.

Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally. ~ Jon Kabat-Zinn

The word Mindful or Mindfulness has a specific cluster of meanings, but it is not all that far from the way mama uses the word when she said “mind your manners.” To be mindful is to pay attention. To be mindful is to pay attention in order to cope with life and live in the NOW. But being mindful is more than just paying attention. For example, I can be aware that I’m acting like an irritable jerk, but still not be mindful of my irritable jerk-dumb-ness. To be mindfully irritable I would have to be deliberately conscious of where the sensations I’m labeling as irritations are located. If I were just aware that that I was irritated, my mind might also wonder around jumping from thought to thought. I might be rerunning the incident that sparked this irritation in me, and imagining me saying or doing something different this time and crushing my opponent, or I might also be watching TV, or answering my wife when she asks a question, and I have the ability to do several of these things at once.

There are benefits of being mindful that come only from mindfulness. You see, when you practice mindfulness you can study yourself, what you are feeling at the very moment you are feeling it, and you can explore that feeling without getting all mired by the guilty past or entangled in your worrisome future. Just thinking is not good enough. If you just think, then the mind will wander, and unleash all sorts of negative thinking and raw emotions including anger, yearnings, jealousy, self-hatred, depression, and every shade and shape of fear that resides within the folds of your brains. If you practice mindfulness you harness and manage your thoughts, which in turn promote insightfulness and inner calm.

Unless you are practicing mindfulness there is no purposefulness to your awareness. There is no conscious effort to bring your attention back to the irritation, or the joy, or the walking, or the eating, or whatever it is that you are doing in the NOW. Being purposeful is an essential aspect of mindfulness. Having the purpose of staying with our experience of NOW keeps us in the present moment. Being in the present moment is a cure to all the negative emotions we feel. Mindfulness keeps us from chewing on the past or the future, regurgitating our guilt [the past] and worry [the future] and then chewing on them some more.

If I am irritated and become mindful of how I am feeling in the present, in my NOW, the irritation eventually dissolves because irritation sprouts from the past and mindfulness is always in the present. If irritations are in the past and if the past no longer exists, then by being mindful you become aware that the irritation in your NOW is based upon nothing, and it is easy to let go of nothing. Mindfulness is a good way to live.

If this were my only life, I would also want to live with mindfulness, so as not to miss anything. And I would want to live with generosity and compassion because they bring happiness here and now, and because I will not be able to keep anything in the end. ~Jack Kornfield

My ole shrink Dr. Frank Shultz use to tell me when I got upset, to: take two or three deep breaths, relax my belly, and then asking myself, “Am I safe?”

Almost always the answer is going to be, “Yes.” If the answer is “No,” then it’s time to call 911 or run like hell. Almost always, in the present, in your NOW, you are safe. Mindfulness is where our calm, contented self lives.

Comments:

I enjoy Norman’s books. He always has planes with great flying capabilities, with heavily researched and informative text. This book is no different, and stands apart from many paper airplane books in that it focuses on paper planes inspired from real gliders.

All paper planes are essentially gliders, so these seem to imitate their real cousins. Watching the Waco plane fly makes those old WW2 black and white newsreels spring to life.

This book contains plans for 16 planes. All will require cutting with scissors, a sharp hobby knife, 65lb card stock or 5×8 index cards, and some form of glue. A glue stick will work just fine. The idea is that you trace or photocopy the designs onto regular paper, then transfer them to card stock or 5×8 index cards to cut out. DON’T CUT OUT THE DESIGNS FROM THE BOOK! It isn’t necessary. While his method works, it is cumbersome and involves a lot of steps. What I did was scan each plan, and put them into a word document. That way, whenever I need to make one of his planes, I print out the plane onto 65lb cardstock, and cut it out. No need to trace or transfer, and I can make unlimited copies. Two 5×8 plans fit on one 8×11 sheet. A bonus is that I expanded the designs, so that one plan fits onto an 8×11 sheet, and you can see the result in the pictures of the Lilienthal Glider and the Waco Glider. It makes a nice, larger plane, and with a little reinforcing of key areas, they fly AWESOME!

So is there anything I don’t like about the book? Not much. Apart from having to scan the planes (tedious, but a one time affair), there is nothing to not like about it. A lot of good technical data, some personal stories and good history of the planes, it makes for a pleasant read. Combined with great flying designs, I am pleased to award this book a score of 10 out of 10. I would recommend this book to adults, and older children (mainly because of the knife work involved). However, the planes are a joy for children of all ages to fly, and I heartily recommend parents making them with their young children to enjoy.

You can see pictures of the planes I made from this book here at:

The rush of the Christmas shopping season is thrilling for some; however, for the majority of us, it’s just awfully stressful. It’s difficult to figure out what many of our friends, family, and loved ones really want or could truly make use of. We also have to be concerned with our budgets as well as with just finding the time to get all of our shopping and wrapping done.

However, we have been blessed with a wondrous Christmas boon in the last decade, which is simply the Internet. The Internet makes Christmas shopping online, right from the warmth and comfort of our homes, a genuine possibility. People who used to attempt to do all of their seasonal shopping by way of catalogues now have an even faster and more convenient method for remote shopping with the ability to hop online and scan for gift after gift from all around the world.

But, to make your online holiday shopping experience pleasing and secure, you have to know the rules of this virtual road.

A couple of things about Internet based Christmas shopping remain the same as they ever were when all we had were bricks and mortar retailers. For instance, if you are seeking certain merchandise and you find a great deal right off, don’t stop yet. There might be an even better deal on offer somewhere else. And, try to do business with merchants whom you are familiar with or with those whom you have been referred to by friends or family.

Now, with the Internet’s benefits of speed and convenience come some hazards. Identity theft on the Internet is notoriously widespread, for instance, and therefore you should only do business online with merchants that show they provide a secure way of paying (look for the padlock icon).

So, what other things must you consider?

  • Remember that looks can be deceiving–especially online. A great website doesn’t necessarily indicate great products or customer service, nor does it necessarily mean that the company abides by the law. Look for indications that merchants online are members of independent quality and identity verifiers such as Trust UK.
  • Don’t put your trust in merchants that don’t give you their full address and a telephone number. And be especially careful with any merchant who is based outside the UK (and make doubly certain you know where they are based).
  • Try to only do business online with merchants who tell you that they have privacy policies in place and won’t be selling your personal information with others.

If you observe these simple rules, you can have far more peace of mind as you hunt down the best deals this holiday season, and the Internet is the perfect place to find the best of all possible deals! Not only do you get speed and convenience, you save considerable travel expense money by cutting down on your need for things like petrol, public transportation fares, eating out, and so on.

When shopping online, you’ll also find some merchants whose core businesses are web-based. This can save you a bundle of cash, because these merchants have fewer overheads to pay for and can pass on their own savings to you with lower prices. Again, keep in mind that online it’s cheap and easy to price-compare.

And don’t forget to surf far and wide to find those special holiday sales that are being offered. Try to hold out as long as you can if you have got something in your sights; as the big day draws closer merchants slash prices to move products, but be careful, you don’t want to have them run out of stock or not be able to ship it in time for Christmas.

Nits, simply put, are louse eggs. There are three kinds of lice commonly found on humans, attacking the head, the body, and the pubic region. The most common of these is head lice. They are easily spread between humans by physical contact, and require human blood to survive.

The best way to search for these eggs is to closely examine the scalp and hair of the potentially affected person. They will be attached to the scalp or the shaft of the hair and can be white to yellow in color, causing them to often be mistaken for dandruff.

If you locate nits on yourself or a friend or family member, there is no reason to panic! There are a variety of home remedies available for lice removal and also many commercially produced head lice treatments. If you are not comfortable using these treatments or remedies and only a few nits are visible, you can even first try just removing them manually.

Normally, people follow a simple home remedy for lice removal. In this, they wash the hair with a regular shampoo and then comb through it using a nit comb. Another unproven home remedy is to coat the hair thoroughly with a gooey or oily substance like olive oil or mayonnaise and then to bundle the hair up in a shower cap and leave it overnight. This process is expected to suffocate the lice. It may also be possible that while rinsing the hair the lice and nits get washed off.

A number of head lice shampoos are available at your local pharmacy or drugstore. Questions regarding the use of these products should be directed to your pharmacist or physician. Additionally, the use of a nit comb is also recommended with these products, so be sure to pick one up while you can.

No need at all to scrub down your entire house after a family member has been diagnosed with lice. A thorough washing of the affected person’s bedding and personal hair care items should suffice, as lice will die within thirty six to forty eight hours of being off the human head.

There are many different kinds of filter media that are available for water treatment in aquariums and fish tanks, but which is best for your aquarium and how do they differ? Part of gaining an insight into using the right filter media for your aquarium is understanding the strains on your fish and the conditions of their environment.

The nitrogen cycle begins with any waste products which are produced by your fish. A kind of bacteria known as “nitrofiers” works to break down these waste products (called ammonia) into nitrites. This is later then further broken down by the same bacteria in the final product, nitrates. The first two of these chemicals in the process are both highly toxic to fish and the last may prove to be fatal in large enough quantities. If your fish are experiencing a large level of any of these chemicals, then it is likely your filter is not providing enough purification alone and additional water treatment is recommended.

A simple way to test if your aquarium could use extra water treatment is to look at level of nitrates in the water, this can be done by using a test strip which reports the level of nitrate in your water. 50 ppm is a deadly level for many species of fish and the lower the level of concentration the better. Polyester media and charcoal media work by chemical filtration by trapping particles passing through your water into the media and charcoal in many cases is believed to be more effective.

Foam bloaks of many different brands have also proved popular in many fish and aquarium enthusiasts. Although these may need regular cleaning, they can provide additional filtration as well as allowing the benefical bacteria, nitrofiers, to build up in your aquarium. With a combination of sponges and either a charcoal or polyester filter media, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate should be kept low in your aquarium. Finally, many plants also are useful in the nitrogen cycle and will help you keep on top of providing a healthy environment for your fish.

In conclusion, providing your tank is left to cycle before introducing fish for several weeks, with a mixture of mechanical and biological filtration your water may never need additional treatment. Make sure to check your water regularly and should you find a high level of toxic chemicals to your fish, consider additional plantation and either charcoal or polyester medias.

So you want to lose a little bit of the weight that you’ve had building up. Nothing wrong with that, that’s for sure. The problem comes on Christmas day when everyone gathers around the table to eat that huge Christmas dinner. It’s certainly hard to say no to all that great food! You have the Christmas turkey of course, and then you have the stuffing, the yams, cranberry sauce, potatoes, and many other things that are just too numerous to count.

Once all is said and done you feel bloated, and you think you’ll never eat again. You take your antacid tablet and lay down for a nap. But once the nap is over, it’s time to get to work and make some changes in your life. How will you lose all that weight? It’s a hard question, but hopefully we will be able to supply you with a few answers.

The first thing you need to do is sit down and make a promise to yourself. Tell yourself that you ARE going to lose this weight, and that you CAN do it. It’s really not as hard as you might think! So what is the first step to achieving your goal?

The first thing that you will want to do is set a routine for yourself and stick with it. You might choose to get up at the crack of dawn and jog for a few miles, or you might just want to do a few situps and pushups in the morning. If you really want to, then you could join a fitness club or gym. Here you will find a personal trainer that will make it their mission to ensure you get into the best shape of your life and lose those extra pounds; this form of support can really help you to achieve your ultimate goals. If that doesn’t sound good to you, then what would?

You will of course need to drop some of your old habits. These could include anything from eating chocolate to excessive drinking. Make sure you stay on a specific weight loss diet, and of course make sure that you are getting the recommended amount of exercise. Many people fall short when it comes to the exercise part. They say things like “Well I’ll work out tomorrow!”. Then tomorrow becomes the next day, and the next day, and…well…you get the picture.

Is sticking to it going to be easy? No. Did anyone ever say it was going to be easy? Probably not, but in any case having a strong will is important. If this is truly what you want, then there is no doubt that you will find a way to grab it soon enough. Even if this is the hardest thing you ever do, you will find a way, because in many ways your life and happiness depend on it. Enough talk now. Get underway and find a way to shed that weight. Diet, exercise, do whatever you have to do, and for crying out loud stop looking at that plate of leftover Christmas cookies!

Not all Waterfront Lots can have piers because of protected foliage, water depth or length of your shoreline.

There are minimums with regard to how many feet of shoreline you must have to get a pier. A representative of Duke Energy must approve all piers and docks. There are also restrictions on the square footage of your dock, whether it can be covered (HOA restriction), the length and how far into a cove your dock can extend. In cases where a pier exist but does not match the above criteria, Duke Energy usually allows this pier on Lake Norman to be grandfathered in. However modifications to the pier will be affected.

You Boat May Be Too Tall

If you own a large power boat or a sailboat, it should be important to know the clearance of bridges around Lake Norman. Below are some measurements(at full pond). Knowing where these bridges are located in relationship to your potential home may be very important.

Why these are important is this. These bridges are positioned in places where you could be prohibited from taking your boat by water to big open water and restaurants.

Perth Road 5′3″

Kale Road 5′6″

Cornelius 4′0″

Mount Pleasant 5′5″

150 @ Mountain Creek 5′9″

150 @ Reed Creek 5′9″

Williamson Road 6′0″

Navigational charts of Lake Norman are available with these bridge locations as well as channel markers to assist you with choices that you may need to make.

Where is Your Waterfront Property Line? It is NOT ALWAYS at the Shoreline.

Surveys are important in every real estate transaction. Encroachments, easements, existing well and septic tanks could interfere with your plans. It is recommended that you always review a survey before closing. Some of the older homes on Lake Norman have a portion of the property that is actually owned by Duke Energy and a survey will show you if this situation still exists.

Also, most waterfront homes on Lake Norman have septic systems. By design, there also has to be an area called a repair area that is the same size as the actual septic system. This is in case something goes wrong and the existing system has to be replaced. This is important in the event the homeowner wants a pool or to construct additional building(s). If these additions encroach the repair area, they will not be allowed.

Will You Have Water in Winter?

If you are buying waterfront property, do you know how deep the water is? Do you have ‘year’ round water? Duke Energy manages the level and typically drops the level 5-10 feet in winter. The depth of water at your dock can be adversely affected by this in winter so make sure there is adequate water at full pond to support this drop. In most cases, dredging is allowed but can be very expensive.

Roby Robertson is a broker/owner of Real Living In Style at Lake Norman. He has assisted many clients with buying and selling Lake Norman property. Visit his Lake Norman blog at http://movetolakenorman.wordpress.com or check out the list of Lake Norman communities at http://www.nc-lake-norman.com.
